The ASGCA
Foundation
The mission of the ASGCA Foundation is to help fund
the research of golf course design and to disseminate that
information to those interested in designating green space
for recreational purposes. It is also dedicated to growing
the game of golf and preserving and promoting the beauty and
virtue of the game. If interested in making contribution to
the Foundation, please contact
ASGCA.
Projects Supported by
the ASGCA Foundation
In keeping with the mission of the ASGCA Foundation, and at the direction of its Board of Directors,
the following are among the projects funded in the recent
past:
MSU Architects Gallery
This video archiving project is hosted and maintained
by the Michigan State University Library. Many of ASGCA’s
most prolific and notable members have shared their design
philosophy and reminiscences on video. These videos can be
viewed by visiting the Architects Gallery.
“Building a Practical Golf Facility"
This groundbreaking book by Past President Dr.
Michael Hurdzan, ASGCA makes the case for alternative golf
facilities and describes eight “levels” of golf,
from small practice ranges to resort-style championship courses.
The book includes dozens of case studies illustrating how
communities and individuals made golf work within their budgets
and space available.
ASGCA Display at Pinehurst
ASGCA has teamed with North Carolina’s
Pinehurst Resort, the site of its first Annual Meeting in
1947, to display artifacts connected with both Donald Ross,
ASGCA’s honorary first president, and the practice of
golf course architecture. The permanent display can be viewed
in the historic clubhouse at Pinehurst, located adjacent to
the venerable Donald Ross layout, Pinehurst No. 2.
“An Environmental Approach to Golf
Course Development"
Recently revised for publication, the third
edition of this handbook and case study collection is for
anyone interested in developing a golf course with sensitivity
to Mother Nature’s gifts. First written in 1993, the
current version features important background information
regarding permitting and the development process. The 16 case
studies provide real-life examples of recent projects which
tackled challenging environmental issues like water supply,
wildlife habitat, wetlands protection and mitigation and brownfield
reclamation. The book also includes an extensive reference
section, including listings of books, organizations and Web
sites for more information.
“Presidents I Have Known"
A modern history of ASGCA, this book was written
by ASGCA Executive Secretary Emeritus Paul Fullmer, who drew
on his 35 years as administrative head of the association
to write this 2006 book. This fascinating look at the personalities
and circumstances that made up ASGCA’s first 60 years
is an invaluable record of a unique group of professionals.

interested in purchasing a copy.
