Designer Notes:
Taking advantage of the rolling hills of eastern Iowa, Hunters Ridge has already been recognized as one of the best public golf facilities in the state. This became evident when the USGA tabbed Hunters Ridge as a qualifying site for the 1998 U. S. Senior Amateur, after being open for only one season. Growing up as a native of Marion, I was able to use my experiences of playing golf courses around the state to develop an outstanding residential/golf community for my hometown. The routing has made the best use of the topography, from the cornfields to the creek bed and wetland areas. In addition, 7 acres of wetlands were created to enhance the surrounding environment. The par 3 fourth hole is a prime example of the opportunities provided by the site. Playing from an elevated tee, the short par 3 has all the elements of a classic hole. The downhill tee shot is to a narrow green fronted by a small pond and pot bunker and backed by a deep bunker, mounds, and meadow grasses. The prevailing winds that sweep across the course make club selection tricky, but vital. However, simply reaching the green is not a guaranteed par, as a ridge separates the right side of the green from the left side, making distance and accuracy a requirement. |
