6th Hole • Par 4

Designer Notes:

The Tangle Ridge Golf Course was designed to be a golf course of great excitement. One technique utilized was the driveable par 4, 6th hole. There is probably no greater thrill for the public player than the ability to drive a par 4 green. The 6th hole accomplishes this by playing directly downwind, with a 70 foot drop from tee to green.

The golfer has two distinct options:

  1. Play safe with an iron, short of the bunkering near the green
  2. Attempt to hit a driver up the narrow "run-up ramp" in hopes of reaching the green. The penalty for missing will be an 80-100 yard sand shot, arguably the most difficult shot in golf.

The contour of the green affects the decision as well. There is a distinct ridge running through the middle of the green. When the pin is left, the possibility of an eagle two is present.

This hole was completed directly after golf trips to San Francisco Golf Club and Royal Melbourne. Upon return, I recognized that the dramatic downhill nature of the hole gave us an opportunity to create the flash bunkers so typical of Tillinghast and Mackenzie's work.
