Rick Phelps officially began his career in golf course architecture in 1989, but his first experience in the field was in 1977 at the age of 10 when assisting his father, Dick Phelps, with construction staking on two golf course projects that summer. Rick's early exposure to the profession then progressed through his teenage years when he helped with drafting, cost estimating and other office duties. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Colorado School of Environmental Design in 1989 and immediately began work with his father's Colorado-based firm. He was elected a regular member of ASGCA in 2003. He has served on the Environmental, Golf and Strategic Planning committees and served as ASGCA President in 2011 - 2012. Rick has worked across the United States from California to Florida, with his greatest concentration of projects completed in the Rocky Mountain Region. His work is known for its strategic and aesthetic variety, playability and environmental stewardship. He has also completed numerous remodel projects throughout the country on layouts by various original architects, with a particular emphasis on Press Maxwell projects.
