American Society of Golf Course Architects
Elects Seven New Members

The American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) welcomed seven new Associate Members to its ranks at the group’s 59th Annual Meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif.

The election of Richard Baril (Spring, Tex.), Jeffrey Lucovsky (Jacksonville, Fla.), Greg Martin (Batavia, Ill.), Michael Smelek (Spring, Tex.), Brit Stenson (Cleveland, Ohio), Jason Straka (Columbus, Ohio) and Ray Wiltse (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) brings ASGCA membership to 171. The new ASGCA Associate Members are:

Straka Jason Straka – Straka is Senior Design Associate at Hurdzan Fry Golf Course Design of Columbus, Ohio. He holds both a bachelors degree and a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University. His courses include: The Club at Bond Head, Beeton, Ontario, Canada; Shelter Harbour Golf Club, Westerly, R.I.; Turner Hill Golf Club, Ipswich, Mass.; Georgian Bay Club, Collingwood, Ontario, Canada; and Philadelphia Cricket Club, Philadelphia, Pa.
   
Wiltse Ray Wiltse – Wiltse is a golf course architect from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. He has a certificate in Electrical Engineering from Dublin Technical College and a certificate in Horticultural Maintenance and Design from Delta College. His courses include: King’s Challenge, Cedar, Mich.; Millwood Golf & Racquet Club, Springfield, Mo.; Belmont Country Club, Leesburg, Va.; King’s Walk, Grand Forks, N.D.; Reunion Resort, Orlando, Fla.; and King’s Creek, Spring Hill, Tenn.
   
Stenson Brit Stenson – Stenson is Director of Course Design for IMG, based in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture and holds a degree in City Planning. His courses include: Grandview O’Meara Course, Huntsville, Ontario, Canada; The Rock a Faldo Design, Minett, Ontario, Canada; Tuhaye, O’Meara Design, Park City, Utah; Hang Gang Golf, Woosnam Design, Shenzen, China; Zhuhai Golden Gulf Golf, Colin Montgomerie, Zhuhai, China; and Ile Aux Cerfs, Langer Design, Mauritius, Indian Ocean.
   
Smelek Michael Smelek – Smelek is a partner in the firm of von Hagge, Smelek and Baril, based in Spring, Texas. He is a graduate of the University of Idaho where he earned a degree in Landscape Architecture. His courses include: Torreon Golf Club, Show Low, Ariz.; Los Lagos, Edinburgh, Tex.; Bosque Real, Col. Lomas Altas, Mexico; Ube Country Club, Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan; La Vista, Puebla, Mexico; and Grey Hawk Golf Club, La Grange, Ohio.
   
Martin Greg Martin – Martin is principal of Martin Design Partnership of Batavia, Ill. He holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University. His courses include: The Links at Carillon, Plainfield, Ill.; Millwood Golf & Racquet Club, Springfield, Mo.; Wildridge at Mill Run, Eau Claire, Wis.; Glen Erin Golf Club, Janesville, Wis.; and The Oaks Golf Course, Cottage Grove, Wis.
   
Lucovsky Jeffrey Lucovsky – Lucovsky is Vice President of Mark McCumber and Associates. He is a graduate of the University of Florida where he earned his degree in Landscape Architecture. His courses include: Hidden Cypress Golf Club, Bluffton, S.C.; Golf Club of Southhampton, St. Augustine, Fla.; Tunica National, Robinsonville, Miss.; Hunters Run South, Boynton Beach, Fla.; and Riverside Golf Club, Macon, Ga.
   
Baril Richard Baril – Baril is a partner in the firm of von Hagge, Smelek and Baril, based in Spring, Texas. He holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Idaho. His courses include: Red Tail, Avon, Ohio; Houston National, Houston, Tex.; El Tigre, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; White Witch, Montego Bay, Jamaica; and RSHECC, Madrid, Spain.

Candidates for Associate Membership in ASGCA complete a rigorous multi-phase application process that includes peer review of four completed courses, discussions with project owners and a personal interview to assess the candidate’s professional capabilities, design philosophies and ethical standards.

ASGCA Background

Founded in 1946 by 14 leading architects, including Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the American Society of Golf Course Architects is a non-profit organization comprised of 180 golf course designers located throughout the United States and Canada. Members are actively involved in the design of new courses, the renovation of existing layouts, and issues affecting the future of the game.
